First-Year Seminar: Values, Attitudes, and Beliefs Student success courses have been included in higher education since 1877 at Johns...
Nick,
ReplyDeleteAddressing how one must meet certain needs before moving on to the next level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a great way to connect self-esteem to the humanist orientation. I think your literature does a great job of connecting many of the dots in our program design. Discussing self-efficacy and how one finds value in their work and themselves was well done also.

Nick,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your literature review. I think a student's self-esteem is very important to the learning process. I look forward to reading your group's program design soon!

Hi Nick,
ReplyDeleteVery well written paper. Everything flowed nicely together and I enjoyed your subject matter. I particularly liked the quote, "efficacy-based esteem is about what "one can do" in a situation compared with worth-based esteem that emphasizes "who one is". I guess I never realized there was a separation; made me ponder a little bit :). Another interesting part was when you said that "Humanists refuse to accept the notion that behavior is predetermined by neither the environment or one's subconscious. Rather human beings can control their own destiny". After researching my OWN subject for the Lit. Review, Feminist Pedagogy, I have come to realize that the academic environment isn't always an easy environment to control for students in the margins. As hard as they try, they oftentimes remain subjugated. I liked how you went on to say that critical thinking should be fostered. It is very important to evaluate ourselves and our own prejudices and also to examine other points of view.
Excellent comment!

Nick,
ReplyDeleteThis is a well-written review paper! You have captured the main ideas of your topic and provided concrete suggestions about how to apply your topic in practice. The paper flows quite well and the contents you provided are quite informative.
Suggestions:
1. Add the title of your paper.
2. At the beginning of your paper, tell us the main ideas of humanism, from which you introduce self-esteem and how it relates to humanism.
3. At the left side of the table, you need to list the main ideas you found from the literature, and explain these ideas. At the right side of the table, you need to specifically tell us how to apply the theoretical ideas in practice based on the ideas you listed at the left side of the table.
4. Revise your APA format. For example:
"Humanism emphasizes that perceptions are centered in experience, and it also emphasizes the freedom and responsibility to become what one is capable of becoming." (Merriam, p. 282)
---Add the year
In turn, this self-awareness could bring about the opportunity for correction and, hopefully, enhanced performance” (Wiesskirch, 2007).
— Check APA about direct citation.
